USB Flash Drive Albums: Future or Fad? The Space Pirates' Format Experiment

Romak & the Space Pirates

CDs are a thing of the past. Their fragile jewel cases, scratchable surfaces and often high prices simply don't fit in with our high-speed lives. But downloads, even with accompanying art and liner notes, are almost too disposable. It only takes a click and drag to trash an MP3 and there's nothing to show off to your friends unless you feel like scrolling through an iPod. But what if you could mix the convenience of the digital world with tangible signs fandom?

ratsp-usb-bracelet.jpg
It's a bracelet. It's a flash drive. It's an album.

Local band Romak & the Space Pirates might have the answer. The electro-rock outfit released its full-length Attack of the Has-Been Androids last year and has been exploring different album formats ever since. Most recently, the four-piece stumbled upon an unusual concept, a wearable, multi-purpose album.

The latest version of Attack of the Has-Been Androids is a USB flash drive bracelet, featuring the album, art and lyrics and a video. Keyboardist D. Bene Tleilax cites the decline in CD sales, an interest in "pure, digital data" and a friend who began importing USB jewelry as inspiration for the decision.

Romak & the Space Pirates aren't the first to flash their tunes. Last March, trend-setting Japanese pop star Ayumi Hamasaki released one version of her album Next Level on an intricately decorated flash drive that could double as a charm. Ringo Starr, of all people, experimented with USB on last year's Liverpool 8. The Space Pirates kept their approach simple: It's packaged as a black-and-white, logo-emblazoned wristband and holds 496 mb in comparison to Hamasaki's 2 gb release.

"People like the novelty of it," says Tleilax.

Will USB albums be the next big thing? It's possible. Unusual designs can grab the attention of potential fans the way album covers once did and the wearable art is a subtle way for fans to show their devotion. The Space Pirates' experiment has gone quite well, with their supply of "300 or 400" flash drive bracelets almost completely depleted. The band will have the remaining copies on hand at their LA Pride performance in West Hollywood this Sunday.

Can't see this lasting long. Are people really going to want to have a box of USB bracelet albums?

I love Ayumi Hamasaki! I'm working on a cover of one of her songs, but I didn't know she put out a USB album.

The british nu-rave band Hadouken put out a USB album too, it was pretty sweet.

Plus if the albums suck, you can always record over them!

...historically, there is a small time window just following the break of a new format where the timid manufacturers of media storage units are awaiting the numbers of assurance. That time has come again. Humans love the tangible, and yet again the media has shrunk. Perhaps the new storage units will be desk-top steel DOWEL racks, around which usb bracelets will hang?

Sorry to come across so didactic...

d. bene tleilax says:

to John - cool thing is, it's just a flash drive. it won't be obsolete til USB is obsolete... if you buy an album this way then later decide you don't want it, you can delete it from the drive and just put whatever else you want on it. it's an inherently reusable storage device.

Posted On: Wednesday, Jun. 10 2009 @ 5:03PM
John says:

to d. bene tleilax - the album coming on a flash drive and it being reusable might be the only good part. But seriously, How many flash drives does any one person need? I'm a digital artist and I actively use 2 flash drives. I can't imagine using more than 3. So if I have have 10 flash drive albums, that's 7 sitting around, depending on storage space. And so on.

This is a really good idea but I don't think its the next format. It's a great novelty and a wonderful promotional technique. Anytime you're around a computer and you want to someone to hear the record, you just plug your bracelet in!

I don't know if the format will last or not, but who cares, I want one! And I dig Romak and the Space pirates - soo good live...I wants to see again.

Papa Homer says:

Well now, I remember way back in '57, when I wuz good lookin', had all my teefe, we still had some 78 RPM disks comin' out, 33 1/3 RPM LPs were just becoming less rare but we already wore our 45 RPM disks as jewelry. I knew this one girl that liked to wear a pair on her, Oh, Ummm, never mind...

This USB thing is just a little easier to tote around, holds more music, and is just the thing these days, Next thing will be neurally networked so you can live inside the music and stored on 3D memory arrays that can be swallowed. It is all good. Any of you that haven't heard the Space Pirates need to get your geriatric butt in gear and go to these shows, They do NOT dissapoint!

Monkey Bucket says:

I remember when RoMak first told me they were going to release the album in this format. I wasn't sure about that idea at first. I think its a fun concept, and I can see the potential for bands to make some nice wearable art for their fans. At the shows, I see that people really want these things, so now I'm thinking it was a rather brilliant and forward thinking move on their part.
Every few years you will see some other new format being introduced. I used to have 1000 laserdiscs, lol. I thought that format was going to last forever. I thought the same with CDs. Time goes by fast, so there will always be something coming around to replace something. I see some really fun potential in bands making wearable/playable art for their fans. If you don't believe that these things won't be collectible in some way, look at your vinyl albums with interesting packaging, picture discs and what have you. If they release the next album in this format, they should have multicolored wristbands or something. Maybe some lights, so when you plug it in you get a little light show or something.
Go see these guys!

Mike Olivarez says:

I personally find the idea fascinating, and I completely agree on the tangibility issue. There needs to be another set of levels in which the artist can reach out to their fans beyond the music, and it can show by offering a flexible option like this. Whether one can wear it, accessorize with it, or make it a part of a larger project. For instance say each album is a piece of a more intricate, physical, artistically unique puzzle, it's truly up to the musicians/artisans who design these works. And for me, the idea of visual art transcending sound is vital.

I'm sure there are other means that'll come down the pipe, but I for one dig the possibilities.

If nothing else, it looks good on my risk. I think all flash drives should
be made this way.
