Ann Magnuson to Debut a Short Film about Gram Parsons As Part of Masses Screening at the Downtown Independent Theater on Saturday

Saturday night at the Downtown Independent, LA-based collective/production company the Masses will present a look at the work they've produced in 2009. The line-up of films by the collective, which LA Weekly did a cover story on last year after the death of one of its most visible members, Heath Ledger, includes a number of premieres, including new videos from Masses directors by Beach House, the Bowerbirds, Why?, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Tune Yards.

Le Corps Mince de Françoise, "Something Golden"

Longtime Masses member Ann Magnuson, best known for her acting, performance art and nightclub shows, will introduce her short film "Time Travelling Hooker: Room 8,″ about the death of Gram Parsons in a Joshua Tree motel. Read Magnuson's description of the film here. She'll be on hand to do a performance with Dublab DJs.

Too, the evening will feature a screening of Heath Ledger, Norris Houk and Daniel Auber's amazing video for Modest Mouse's "King Rat." (Obligatory disclosure: I am an honorary member of the collective.)

Isaiah Seret's video for Hecuba's "The Magic"

Here's the rundown of the evening, from the Masses website:

FILMS BY: Matt Amato (debuts of new videos for Beach House + The Bowerbirds), Ben Barnes (debut of new video for Why?), Alex Ebert, Raúl B Fernández, Ben Kutsko, Heath Ledger, Grant Leuchtner, Cory Marrero, Isaiah Seret (debut of new video for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), Eli Stonberg (debut of new Vision Version starring Tune Yards) + premiere of a short film by Ann Magnuson.

MUSIC VIDEOS FEATURING: Beach House, The Bowerbirds, Daedelus, The Dodos, Dublab Vision Versions, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Grant Leuchtner, Hecuba, Le Corps Mince de Françoise, The Long Lost, Modest Mouse, Port O'Brien, Tune Yards, Grace Woodroofe (no word on whether the video set to screen is Ledger's final directing job -- Woodroofe covering David Bowie's "Quicksand"; we've seen the video, and it's a stunning piece of work.), and The Woods.

+ The premiere of "Time Travelling Hooker: Room 8″ a short film directed by Ann Magnuson.

+ A live performance by Ann Magnuson with the Dublab djs.

+ After the screening grab a drink on the rooftop patio as Dublab djs spin music and Alexandra Pelly projects images.

And, just because it's so frickin' surreal, here's an old Ann Magnuson clip from Night Music featuring a performance by -- get this -- Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bob Weir, Bongwater (Ann Magnuson's first band -- that's her singing) and the Fabulous Pussywillows.
