What Music Do Immigrant Janitors Listen To? And Other Questions at L.A.'s EMP Conference

The legendary venue Jabberjaw will be the subject of the opening roundtable at the conference
The Seattle-based EMP Pop Conference -- Shangri-La for music nerds -- has this year split into five regional ones, and the Los Angeles incarnation starts tonight. Musicians, scholars, and music writers from all over Southern California will discuss and debate, with specific focus on everything from Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city to the Long Beach Music scene. The conference is free and open to the public.

The theme this year is "Pop & Politics In This Town," and co-chair Oliver Wang notes that pop music is defined broadly at the conference -- not so much Top 40 as music popular within any segment of the population. (Another homie, Drew Tewksbury, will also be in effect.)

The Dirty Projectors Are Not Good

dirtyprojectorsfortop.jpg
Repeat after me, "Eclecticism is not a substitute for quality. Eclecticism is not a substitute for euphony. Eclecticism is not a substitute for introspection." One more time.

Everybody got that?

It's maybe not the best ever. At least, that's the opinion of a bunch of at DePaul University college students interviewed in Chicago. You can hear them below in a pretty, pretty funny Consequence of Sound video.

Almost none of whom have any idea who the Stone Roses or Blur are.

But hey, they love Phoenix!

So, let us take a moment to make fun of folks who are younger and/or have different taste and/or have no respect for what came before them and/or are too busy studying so they can survive in this terrifying new economy.

Let's Be Honest: Sonic Youth Are Really Boring

SonicYouthfortopp.jpg
Sonic "Youth"
In the annals of rock there are many bands that people pretend to like, bands with fandoms consisting entirely of people desperately wanting to appear interesting by proxy. Royal Trux is a good example, as are Ween. Basically any Burzum fan who isn't a corpse paint-wearing, basement-dwelling Nazi from the hinter regions of Norway fits neatly in this category. King among bands that no one actually likes, however, is Sonic Youth.

I remember the first time I heard Sonic Youth. I was about 13 and somehow acquired a copy of the tape on SST that runs backward on one side and forward on another. I know, right? How creative. After about 10 minutes of atonal moaning and swirling noise, I went back to my Black Flag and Black Sabbath records. How pedestrian of me, right?
